Donald Trump’s popularity rating is low despite his victory in the week of the primary elections

President Donald Trump has historically low approval ratings, but some of his endorsed candidates won primary elections across the country this week.

Notably, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, Republican of Kentucky, joined forces with a Democrat to force a vote on the Epstein Files Transparency Act last year. Trump and his allies campaigned against him, and his opponent Ed Gallrein, a farmer and former Navy SEAL, clinched the GOP nominee spot in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. A similar result occurred for incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Louisiana, who was surpassed in votes by Trump-backed candidate Rep. Julia Letlow.

Despite the victories of Trump’s candidates within the Republican Party, Trump remains largely unpopular, and some fear this could make Republicans more vulnerable in the midterm elections.

Trump’s approval rating has been net negative for over a year and has fluctuated, but has trended more negatively in recent months. Here is Trump’s average approval rating as of May 22, according to aggregators:

Polls show Trump has little approval on economy

Polls released this week show approval of Trump’s handling of the economy is declining.

In a Quinnipiac University poll of 1,106 registered voters conducted May 14-18 (the margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points), 33 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, compared to 64 percent who disapprove. According to the pollster, this is the lowest approval Trump has received on this issue in both terms.

Republicans have increasingly less support for Trump’s handling of the economy, according to an Associated Press/NORC poll of 1,117 American adults conducted May 14-18. (The margin of error is plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.) Overall, 33% approve of his work on the economy, compared to 67% who disapprove. Republicans give him 63% approval on the economy, up from 78% at the start of Trump’s second term.

Trump’s overall approval rating was 37% in the AP/NORC poll and 34% in the Quinnipiac poll.
