Trump news at a glance: President defends himself against Republicans over moves for Iran deal | Trump administration
Donald Trump defended himself against criticism from fellow Republicans on Sunday as he appeared close to reaching a deal with Iran to end the war.
As hawks in his party called the proposed deal a disaster and questioned why the US president had started the conflict in the first place, Trump claimed on social media that his deal would be “the EXACT OPPOSITE” of the one agreed to by Barack Obama, from which Trump withdrew in 2018.
He added that he was not rushing toward a deal, saying “both sides need to take their time to get it right…There can be no mistakes!” »
Trump insisted that “the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports will remain in full force until an agreement is reached, certified and signed.”
“No one has seen” the agreement, “nor knows what it is,” the American president then added. “This is not yet fully negotiated. So don’t listen to the losers, who criticize something they know nothing about.”
Facing growing criticism within his own party, Trump insisted: “I don’t do bad business!” »
US, Iran move closer to peace deal as Trump faces criticism from Republican Party hawks
The proposed deal would offer sanctions relief on Iran and the release of $20 billion in frozen assets in exchange for Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and agreeing to negotiations on its nuclear program over the next 60 days, starting June 5 in Pakistan. Details of the final points of the dispute have not been disclosed. At least $12 billion in assets are in Qatar.
At the heart of the delay is the US demand that the unfreezing of Iranian assets held by Qatar, worth £12 billion, be conditional on progress in handing over Iranian enriched uranium.
The deal would also require Iran, the United States and their allies to stop fighting and for Israel to end its offensive in Lebanon.
