Congress accuses PM Modi of ‘extreme moral cowardice’ in supporting Israel
The Congress party launched a virulent attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, May 29, accusing him of showing “extreme moral cowardice” by becoming the world’s most fervent supporter of Israel. The party described Modi’s stance as a “betrayal” of India’s core values and principles, saying it is unacceptable to millions of Indians.
The criticism follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement at a conference in the West Bank. Netanyahu noted that Israel faces delegitimization around the world, with India being a notable exception. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh responded in a strong message on X (formerly Twitter).
Ramesh claimed that Prime Minister Modi had consistently failed to condemn several controversial Israeli actions. These include the targeted assassination of Iran’s head of state and other senior leaders, the ongoing military operations in Gaza which he described as “genocide and devastation” and the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon.
Ramesh also highlighted Modi’s silence on the forced dispossession and displacement of thousands of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, as well as the restriction of civil rights of Palestinians living in Israel.
“Mr. Modi has emerged as Mr. Netanyahu’s strongest supporter. Israel is part of the Modani conglomerate,” Ramesh said. He further noted that Modi warmly welcomed Israel just two days before the intense aerial bombardment of Iran by Israel and the United States on February 28, 2026.
Ramesh argued that Netanyahu’s praise should be limited to “Prime Minister Modi’s ecosystem” rather than India as a whole. He called Modi’s stance “shameful” and contrary to India’s traditional stance on international issues, particularly regarding Palestine.
The Congress statement reflects the growing political polarization in India over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran-related developments. While the government has maintained strategic ties with Israel in the areas of security, technology and defense, opposition parties continue to demand a more balanced and morally coherent foreign policy, aligned with India’s historic support for Palestinian rights.
