AI as a cricket bat: testing what you believe
Tim Minchin’s Lesson 5 is the most helpful thing I’ve read this year, and the unexpected reason is AI. His advice: take your beliefs to the veranda and beat them with a cricket bat. Be intellectually rigorous. Identify your biases, your biases, your privileges. Treat your assumptions with skepticism. Hold tight to the truth, but be willing to loosen your grip as new information comes to light. Most of the cyber positions I see held by senior leaders, including some of me, were actually learned under threat models that are no longer current. We update the detection rules, but rarely update the underlying beliefs. The colleagues we argue with are too polite. The peers we test against share too much of our context. AI is the best cricket bat we have ever had to test what we believe. Not as a source of truth. Basically like the sparring partner who holds your position the strongest, and then asks you to defend it. Explain a boundary model: Argue this as forcefully as you can, and then tell me the bottom line. Read what comes back. Pay attention to the parts that surprise you. It doesn’t replace the colleague who lived through the incident you’re arguing about, or the operator who can tell you which controls survive contact with reality. It’s actually the cricket bat. It’s not the ground. Now before I send a recommendation to the board, I ask the model to argue against it with a CFO, a supervisor, and a junior engineer. If the recommendation survives all three recommendations, it is much closer to readiness. In my opinion, this is the most valuable practice I added to my workflow in 2026. #AISecurity #Leadership
