Sajid Javid has said supporting Liz Truss in the Conservative Party leadership race that ultimately elected her prime minister was his “biggest mistake in politics”.
Speaking at the Hay festival in Wales, while promoting his memoirs, the former chancellor, who is no longer an MP, said there were friends within the Conservative party with whom he remained in contact.

Following Boris Johnson’s resignation in 2022, Javid initially launched his own campaign for the leadership of the Conservative Party before backing Truss after he was knocked out of the race. Truss’ term lasted just 49 days in 2022, after his government’s disastrous mini-budget.
Javid, who stands down as an MP at the 2024 election, was also asked by Mir what he thought of the vast majority of Conservative MPs who have defected to the Reform Party, to which he simply replied: “Good riddance.”
He also argued that the quality of Britain’s political class had deteriorated in recent years. He said: “Has the caliber of politicians declined in recent years? Yes. I think it’s dramatic. But it would be unfair… to put the blame solely on politicians. Politicians reflect what you vote for.”
“Ultimately, the caliber of politicians depends on the people. If you want different politicians, you have to vote differently – not just thinking about their party label or whatever – but also what kind of person they are, what really motivates them.”
Javid, who is now a partner at an investment firm, argued for increasing MPs’ pay, saying: “We don’t pay politicians enough to attract the most talented people – and that could be a school principal, that could be an accountant, that could be a doctor – to leave their job and say, you know what, I want to serve my country.”

Javid held several ministerial posts under David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson, including as Home Secretary and Chancellor. He then returned to government as Health Secretary under Johnson before resigning in July 2022, amid a wave of resignations that ultimately led to the end of Johnson’s term.
After resigning as an MP ahead of the 2024 general election, Javid became a partner at Centricus, a Mayfair-based private equity and asset management firm founded by his former colleagues at Deutsche Bank. He is also chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
