British stubbornness versus Greek flexibility
It is truly alarming how populism can so easily destroy politically mature countries. A classic example is that of the United Kingdom – a nation with a deep history, strong institutions, tradition and (supposedly) robust mechanisms for producing competent leaders.
Over the past decade, six different politicians have served as prime minister, and the current one will almost certainly end in the coming months. The health system is under severe strain, while, for the first time in the UK’s modern history, the state apparatus – once held as a model for much of the Western world – is visibly weakening.
The British ordeal of course began with Brexit, born of legitimate demands. But she was also motivated by a populist political project. David Cameron opened the door to madness by calling the referendum, while Boris Johnson led his country into disaster, capitalizing on the ensuing backlash and exploiting social media as a powerful tool for manipulating public opinion. Both men were products of the same institutional ecosystem – private education, Oxbridge – that has long shaped Britain’s political elite. Cameron arguably misjudged the electorate’s decision-making capacity, while Johnson embodied the archetype of an elite politician who managed to carve out a populist persona.
Today, the United Kingdom seems to be in a state of drift. Its economy has suffered significant damage, while its universities have seen a notable decline in foreign student flows. On the global geopolitical stage, no one takes Britain very seriously anymore, as even its armed forces increasingly resemble a shadow of their former stature. The current government led by Keir Starmer is doing everything it can to destroy the economy and drive wealth out of the country.
Some argue that Britain could yet go through a deeper political crisis, potentially with Nigel Farage becoming prime minister, before ultimately entering a phase of stabilization and recovery. Others – still in the minority – suggest that Labor could make a change of direction and re-examine the possibility of closer alignment, or even reintegration, into the European Union. However, at present, no such optimistic trajectory is clearly visible.
What should ultimately concern us is how a country like the UK got onto such a slippery slope. How easily it bowed to the pressure of populist politics and how limited its institutional guarantees seemed to resist that pressure. If a people like the British could decide to “commit suicide,” it makes us think how much easier it would be for a people traditionally susceptible to strong passions.
In our own case, of course, our saving grace is that, unlike the British, Greeks often say one thing, think another and end up doing something else. One can only imagine what would have happened if we had suffered from this British rigidity and insisted that ‘no’ in the 2015 referendum meant no, rather than becoming a ‘yes’ within just a few days.
