President Trump Confirms He Will Attend NBA Finals Game at Madison Square Garden, Praises Victor Wembanyama

President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday that he will attend an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden next week, making him the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game.

Trump acknowledged the possibility of attending last week when he revealed that he had been invited by New York Knicks owner James Dolan to attend one of the team’s games against the San Antonio Spurs. Asked about it on Thursday, Trump congratulated Dolan, Knicks and Spurs star Victor Wembanyama before confirming he would be in attendance:

“I’ve been a fan of the Knicks for a long time, and I’m also a fan of Jim Dolan. He’s a nice guy, okay? He’s wanted to win for a long time and he’s a competitive guy and he has an incredible team. I don’t think they’ve lost a playoff game. Can you imagine that?

This was not looking good. I saw the start of the match and it didn’t look good. I missed the middle because I talked to the generals all night, but I watched that end of the game and they were dominant. Truly incredible. “Wemby is a great player – he’s going to be a great player and he’s already a great player. I say, ‘How do you guard this guy? He’s 7-foot-5 and he’s got a great shot, right?’ But they find a way to make it happen. It’s a great team and I’m happy for Jim because Jim fought hard to produce such a team, so yeah, you never know.

“The answer is yes, he invited me and I’m going.”

Small clarification: the Knicks lost two games in the first round against the Atlanta Hawks, but are now on a 12-game winning streak during which they have broken NBA goals margin records.

It remains to be seen what kind of reception President Donald Trump will receive from Knicks fans who can afford NBA Finals tickets.

Trump was then asked which game he would attend and said Monday’s Game 3 was a possibility, before joking that he might attend Game 4 as well:

“It could be Monday…maybe I’ll do both.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver welcomed the possibility a day earlier, via ESPN’s Ben Golliver:

“President Trump is truly a New Yorker. I’m thrilled that another New Yorker wants to be a part of the excitement and joy around this Knicks team.”

A sitting president during an NBA Finals game would be unprecedented. Trump frequently attended sporting events as president, including UFC events hosted by his friend, CEO Dana White. This relationship led to the creation of UFC Freedom 250, a card that will be held on the South Lawn of the White House on June 14.

Trump’s presence comes with increased security, however, meaning Knicks fans will likely want to arrive at Madison Square Garden with plenty of time to spare. It was a similar story when Trump attended the US Open final last year, which started late and with many empty seats because of fans waiting to go through security.

Considering how much Knicks fans will pay to attend Game 3, with an entry price of $7,142 as of Thursday morning per Gametime, they wouldn’t be happy with a repeat.

The Knicks lead 1-0 in the final after a 105-95 victory over the Spurs on Wednesday. This is their first trip to the Finals since 1999 and they are now three wins away from their first NBA title since 1973.
