Trump hints Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu could visit US as early as next week | Donald Trump News

US President Donald Trump has hinted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could visit the White House as early as next week, in what would be his first visit since the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran.

On Saturday, Trump told media outlet Axios that Netanyahu had requested the meeting.

The US president also speculated that the White House meeting could take place after he returns from the annual NATO summit, which this year will be held in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7-8.

But the meeting comes as tensions between Trump and Netanyahu have spilled over into public opinion.

Israel has opposed the Trump administration’s efforts to negotiate a ceasefire with Iran, and Trump has openly criticized Netanyahu for Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon, which threaten to scuttle any negotiated agreement.

In his brief phone interview with Axios, Trump reportedly dismissed speculation of a rift between the two leaders, while asserting his own authority over Netanyahu.

“We get along very well. [Netanyahu] knows who’s boss,” Trump told Axios.

The United States and Israel are long-time allies. The United States was the first international government to recognize the State of Israel in 1948, and in the decades since, Israel has become the largest cumulative recipient of American foreign aid of any country since World War II.

In 2016, the United States issued a memorandum pledging to provide Israel with $38 billion in military aid over a decade, the largest program of its kind, and it has continued to provide Israel with additional military assistance in recent years, including in its genocidal war on Gaza.

During Trump’s second term as president, the United States also joined Israel in two wars against Iran: one in June 2025 and another that began on February 28.

The latest conflict, however, has been widely denounced as an unprovoked act of aggression, in violation of international law. Trump also faced domestic backlash for deploying U.S. troops without congressional approval.

A June 24 Quinnipiac University poll, for example, found that 60 percent of American voters felt the war with Iran was “not worth it,” compared to just 34 percent who said they approved of the conflict.

In the same survey, 48% of respondents said the United States was too supportive of Israel.

Those numbers coincided with a decline in Trump’s approval rating, a grim sign as his Republican Party campaigns to retain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

The Trump administration, however, defended its involvement in the conflict by saying it was preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, an aspiration that the government in Tehran has long denied.

He maintained that his uranium enrichment program was intended solely for civilian energy purposes.

Still, Trump and his officials sought to end the war, announcing a two-week ceasefire agreement on April 8 that was extended indefinitely.

On June 17, the United States and Iran also signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at suspending hostilities, although its implementation remains uneven.

Since the memo was approved, the United States and Iran have exchanged fire over the passage of commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and Israel has continued to attack southern Lebanon, in violation of its terms.

Trump expressed frustration over Israeli strikes on Lebanon, which prompted Iran to threaten to close the Strait of Hormuz again.

In early June, Trump confirmed to the New York Post that he called Netanyahu “fucking crazy” during a phone call with the Israeli leader, highlighting his actions in Lebanon.

“I was a little disturbed by his constant fight with Lebanon,” Trump told the Post.

But the United States has not changed its policy toward Israel, and Trump stressed to the newspaper that his relationship with Netanyahu remains strong.

“We worked very well together. I like Bibi a lot. And I work very well with him,” he said.

If Netanyahu arrives in Washington this month, it would mark his seventh trip to the United States during Trump’s second term.

No other country’s leader has made as many official visits to the United States as Netanyahu since Trump returned to power in January 2025.

Netanyahu’s last visit was in February, just before Israel and the United States launched their first round of strikes against Iran in the current conflict.

Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant, remain the subject of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court. Neither the United States nor Israel, however, recognize the authority of the Court.
