Netanyahu begs Trump not to give F-35s to Turkey before NATO summit in Ankara
WASHINGTON — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly asked President Trump on Monday not to send advanced F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, warning that the shipment would “disturb the balance of power” in the region.
One of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s goals ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara this week is to get his country readmitted to the F-35 program, despite bipartisan resistance in Washington.

“Turkey is a great country, but it is governed by a man who openly calls for the annihilation of Israel,” Netanyahu told “Fox & Friends.” “He occupies half of Cyprus, a NATO country. He threatens Greece, another NATO country. And he talks openly about conquering Jerusalem.”
“I don’t think they should receive F-35s or engines for their fighter jets, because that would upset the balance of power in the Middle East, which is ultimately guaranteed by Israeli air superiority and also by the American position in the Middle East.”
The F-35s are considered the most powerful and versatile fighter jets in the world, with the Israeli Air Force having at least three dozen in its fleet.
Turkey was excluded from the F-35 fighter jet program in 2019 after buying it the Russian S-400 missile system, which U.S. officials feared could be used to learn more about the F-35’s capabilities.
Although Turkey boasts of being NATO’s second-largest army after the United States, it has repeatedly clashed with other European members of the powerful military alliance – notably Greece over centuries-old territorial claims in the Aegean Sea.
Turkey was briefly sanctioned by the United States and several European countries after Erdogan ordered a major military offensive and bombing targeting Kurds in northern Syria in 2019.
The NATO member has a complex relationship with Russia, having shot down a Su-24 fighter jet that entered its airspace in 2015, for which Erdogan he later apologized.
In 2023, after the invasion of Ukraine, Erdogan said: “I trust Russia as much as I trust the West.”
Turkey has nonetheless provided military support to Ukraine and appears intent on undermining Russian dominance in the Black Sea. Erdogan has also supported Ukraine’s NATO bid, although he recently opposed the admission of Finland and Sweden to the alliance due to their hosting of Kurdish militants in Stockholm.
Erdogan and his allies have sharply criticized Israel since its war against Hamas in response to the bloody terrorist attack of October 7, 2023.
“His foreign minister, his number two, said the Jewish state had no place among humanity,” Netanyahu said. “Basically, we have to eliminate him. His interior minister, he can’t wait to be the government, governor of Jerusalem.”
Netanyahu further lambasted Turkey, calling it “a regime infected by the Muslim Brotherhood, an extreme movement that hates America and chants ‘Death to America’ on that side of the spectrum.”
Trump has often praised Erdogan, calling him an “extraordinary leader” and a “good friend.”
