Trump wrongly identifies former Senator Kelly Loeffler as Nicki Minaj

ATLANTA, Ga. — President Donald Trump appeared to confuse superstar rapper Nicki Minaj with Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler Monday during a White House speech promoting a new investment program for children.

The slip-up occurred at a Rose Garden Club luncheon tied to the launch of the Trump accounts, a proposal included in the Republicans’ tax and spending package for 2025. Trump had already marked the day by ringing the opening bell for trading on the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ.

At the White House event, Trump recognized Jeff Sprecher, president of Intercontinental Exchange and Loeffler’s husband, then launched into praising the SBA administrator, a former U.S. senator from Georgia — before getting his name wrong.

“Jeff is awesome and he’s married to someone who does phenomenal work at the SBA small business, Nicki Minaj,” Trump said. “…She did a fantastic job and I appreciate it.”

Minaj, who was also at the event, then received another shout-out from Trump, who called her a “common-sense person.”

What the event was about

The appearances in the Oval Office and Rose Garden were aimed at boosting the rollout of Trump accounts, touted as a way for children to build wealth at a young age by investing in stock indexes.

The accounts are linked to the Trump law on tax cuts for working families. Trump said the program would start with a large infusion of funds.

“With the ringing of the opening bell of the stock exchange, [Trump Accounts] will now begin to grow along with our booming economy,” Trump said Monday. “Between individual contributions and seed funds, $800 million in new capital will be invested in the stock market for America’s children this week.”

“The New York Stock Exchange was created to finance a whole new government and a whole new vision for our country, so it’s amazing that 250 years later, President Trump is making this directly available to all Americans,” Sprecher said.

How accounts work

The White House said more than six million Trump accounts have already been requested, more than 86% of which came from families earning less than $200,000 a year.

According to the White House, the accounts would be:

Free opening for any American citizen under 18 years old. Automatically funded by an initial investment of $1,000 from the federal government for children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028.
