Xi reports major casualties in China shoe factory fire
BEIJING, July 9 (Reuters) – Firefighters tried to reach people trapped in a burning shoe factory in southeast China on Thursday, as state media reported an unknown number of casualties and President Xi Jinping suggested the fire may “have caused heavy loss of life.”
The fire broke out around noon (0400 GMT) on Thursday in the city of Jinjiang in Fujian province, with people trapped on the roof, state broadcaster CCTV said. It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or injured.
In a directive issued later on Thursday, Xi called for an all-out rescue effort and said the fire had “caused significant casualties”, suggesting the blaze could have caused heavy loss of life.
Videos broadcast by CCTV in the afternoon showed flames engulfing the multi-story factory and thick black smoke billowing into the sky. Several people, apparently trapped by the fire, could be seen on the roof as smoke swirled around them.
Firefighting efforts were still underway, although the open flames had been largely extinguished by 5:40 p.m. (0940 GMT), a local fire official told CCTV. Firefighters and emergency services dispatched 183 people and 35 vehicles to the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire broke out on the ground floor of the factory, a local official told CCTV. Shoemaking materials stored in the building were highly flammable and could cause a fire to spread quickly, the official said.
Due to the materials and adhesives present, the odor at the scene was quite pungent, causing eye irritation, CCTV said.
Jinjiang, in the coastal province of Fujian, is a major shoe and clothing manufacturing center and is often called the “shoe capital” of China.
The city’s thousands of companies made more than 1.2 billion pairs of shoes in 2024, representing 20% of global production, according to official data.
