British police arrest man suspected of murdering former MP Ann Widdecombe
A 26-year-old man was arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder in the killing of Ann Widdecombe, a former British MP and reality TV contestant, police said.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead on Thursday at her home in Haytor Vale, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in southwest England, after suffering what police described as “serious injuries”.
The killing was not considered an act of terrorism and there was no information to suggest it was politically motivated, Deputy Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police Matt Longman said.
Longman did not discuss a possible motive, but said the suspect is in custody as the investigation continues.
“This is truly shocking news, and my thoughts, I think all our thoughts, will be with Ann Widdecombe’s family and friends at this horrible time,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. “Ann was a distinguished politician for many, many years with many accomplishments, and this is a huge, huge loss.”
Widdecombe rose to fame after leaving Parliament as a contestant on reality TV shows Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother. She later joined the Brexit Party and became a spokesperson for the anti-immigration Reform UK party.
She served in the House of Commons as an MP from 1987 to 2010 and was known for her socially conservative views opposing abortion rights and the expansion of LGBTQ rights.
Starmer would not speculate on whether the killing was politically motivated and said the safety of lawmakers was “of the utmost importance” and urged people to transcend political differences.
Security has been stepped up for politicians after the killing of two sitting MPs in the past decade. Labor lawmaker Jo Cox was shot and stabbed in 2016 by a far-right extremist, and conservative David Amess was stabbed in 2021 by an attacker inspired by the Islamic State group.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson called Widdecombe “a heroic Brexiteer and a great orator who could transport Tory audiences into such ecstasy that she was very difficult to follow”.
The management company that represented her after she left politics said her life and career were driven by strong Christian values and a commitment to public service.
“She loved political debate and, 16 years after leaving Parliament, she was still actively campaigning for Reform UK and offering frank views on the burning issues of the day,” Cloud9 Management said.
