India not yet announcing decision to relax or lift flight restrictions
(Reuters) – India has yet to make a decision on when to lift or ease restrictions on domestic and international flights and urged airlines to take travel reservations only after a decision final was taken, said a government minister.
The government announced a halt to domestic flights on March 23, ordering commercial airlines to close their domestic flights in addition to an existing international flight ban to try to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
“The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that to date no decision has been made to open national or international operations,” said Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri in a tweet on Saturday.
“Airlines are advised to open their reservations only after a decision has been made by the government,” he added.
Last year, approximately 144 million people traveled on domestic flights.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day national lockdown in late March to contain the spread of the virus epidemic. The lockout has been extended to at least May 3.
However, India has announced a roadmap to restart certain industrial activities after April 20 in places that are not coronavirus hotspots in an attempt to revive the economy.
India reported more than 15,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 500 deaths early Sunday, according to data from the Indian government.
