The Spain women’s national team captain has apologized after a video of members laughing for her part as they attempted to perform a haka routine drew criticism in New Zealand ahead of the Women’s World Cup.

Captain Ivana Andres read a statement of apology to elders and members of the local Rangitane O Manawatu iwi, or tribe, on Monday at a powhiri, or greeting, ceremony in the North Island town of Palmerston North, where the Spanish squad is stationed.
Also during the ceremony, Andres presented a Spanish game shirt with the word Papaioea, the Maori name for Palmerston North, to tribal elders.

A Rangitane spokesperson told reporters that what happened at the ceremony was a very good outcome.
Their words came from the heart and there was an acknowledgment that they understood that the haka is very precious, not only for the Maori, but for all of Aotearoa.
Spain will play its Group C fixtures in New Zealand and kick off its campaign on Friday when it takes on Costa Rica in Wellington before taking on Zambia and Japan.
