Five-time state championship hockey coach Paul Moggach from Brighton retires
When the Brighton 2019-2020 season ended, Paul Moggach left the rink completely expecting to be back as the Bulldogs’ head coach for a 26th season.
Retirement was the last thing on his mind.
But as the months passed since the end of the season, the retirement has become a ubiquitous thought.
Hes made it official and retired as a coach of one of Michigan’s most successful high school programs after winning five state championships and seventh in all-time states list victories.
It was just the timing of everything, he said. I really can’t pin it down. I haven’t thought about it for a long time. I enjoyed last season. There was nothing I didn’t like about where I was. It was not a lack of passion or anything. Something said to me, maybe it’s time.
I think my wife was very strong behind me all these years. Maybe it’s time to give her a little bit of my winter.
Moggach, 74, is still a full-time director of risk management for the University of Michigan.
While the Brighton season ended shortly before the winter sports tournaments were ended by COVID-19, the pandemic has had an impact on the off-season Bulldogs.
The usual one-on-one exit meetings with players after the season, summer camp and summer program did not take place this year.
That probably had something to do with it, Moggach said. This is a routine that I have had for several years. Once the seasons are over, start planning for the next one, get ready for the camp, and talk to kids. That kind of went away with COVID. While there wasn’t, we were still planning how to get back and what to do next.
Brighton became a state power station during Moggach’s tenure.
The Bulldogs won a State Division 1 championship in 2006, then won four more, making the state final six times in seven years from 2012-18. No coach in Livingston County has won so many MHSAA state championships. Cross-country ski coach Bob Ritsema from Brighton won four.
Moggach had a record of 466-172-47. After playing its first two seasons 7-16 and 6-15-2, the Bulldogs had no loss record in the next 23 and won at least 20 games 12 times. Brighton won 10 regional championships under the supervision of Moggachs after winning three when he was an assistant coach to Rick Bourbonnais.
He and several staff who have taken part in the program over the years have certainly made it a top flight program, said Brighton athletic director John Thompson. Our Triple-A players want to play hockey in high school. He also turned it into a program that our school and our community can be proud of how our players behave and represent themselves.
Paul is one of the few high school hockey coaches who have elevated high school hockey to what it is today in the state of Michigan. Theyve really made it a viable option for high quality players to not only play a sport they love, but also do it as part of a school program, wear the colors and represent their community. It wasn’t always the case with high school hockey in Michigan.
Of Michigan’s public schools, only Trenton (14) and Calumet (6) have won more state hockey championships. Brighton and Marquette are tied with five.
The legacy we created and the program we created, we can compete with anyone, Moggach said. Our schedule is one of the best in the state. To have that, you have to earn it. I believe you deserve everything you get. You don’t just do it by luck. You have to work hard and do the small things and have respect for others. You must have responsibility and liability. I think so. It is sustainable if you stick to your principles.
Thompson said the coaching position will be posted Monday.
Kurt Kivisto, the assistant coach in Brighton for the past 10 seasons, is considered the front runner to replace Moggach. Kivisto played three seasons for Brighton from 2000-01 to 2002-03 and four seasons at Michigan State University.
“We didn’t set a timetable for our head coach searches,” said Thompson. “It’s more about finding the best candidate pool we can get and what the right match is for Brighton.”
