BeachBows win a few games on senior night
HONOLULU The University of Hawai'i's No. 12 beach volleyball team made Senior Night an experience to remember with a pair of victories on a wet and rainy Sunday at the Clarence TC Ching Complex. The Rainbow Wahine defeated Chaminade 5-0 before dispatching No. 19 Grand Canyon 4-1.
By going a perfect 4-0 this weekend, the BeachBows improved their record to 20-11 on the season. Following the competitions, Sabrina Hardisty, Kaylee Glagau, Anna Maidment, Pani Napoleon, Jaime Santer And Riley Wagoner were honored during the Senior Night festivities.
UH's game against Chaminade – the first-ever meeting between the schools – was played in a flurry with UH pulling out the win. The BeachBows won four of the five matchesplays convincingly against a Silversword side (3-8) in the first season. Senior Sabrina Hardisty made her first appearance in the starting lineup this season, along with Riley Wagoner at court No. 4. Chaminade's Leilani Ama and Grace Talpash extended the UH duo to three sets, but Hardisty and Wagnoner ultimately secured a UH sweep with a 21-13, 19-21,15-8 win.
In the nightcap, UH staged a rematch with GCU (13-14). A day after beating the Lopes 3-2, the 'Bows earned their second win over GCU in as many days. They did it the same way with flights #3, 4 and 5 all going the full three sets. But unlike the first matchup, UH flipped the script and took two of those three jobs, including a game-winning performance by senior Anna Maidment with partner Sydney Miller on flight no. 4.
The 'Bows got the third point from senior duo Glagau and Napoleon, who closed the door on GCU with a dominant 21-17, 21-10 win over Sarah Dickson and Katie Keefe on the No. 2 flight. It completed an undefeated weekend ahead of Glagau and Napoleon, who have won five of six matches since being paired together two weeks ago.
With the double match win already in hand, UH finished the night at the top of the senior rankings Jaime Santer came out on top in her last home game as she and partner Alana Embry took a straight set victory over Krista Rowan and Sophie Hladyniuk to win their team-best 21st doubles match of the year.
The Rainbow Wahine will say goodbye this weekend before heading to Long Beach for the 2024 Big West Championship, April 25-26. The winner of that tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in early May.
