TMU basketball coach to help lead Team Canada at 2024 Olympics – News & Events
Carly Clarke is once again packing her bags for the Olympics, but this time the assistant coach of the Canadian women's national team can better focus on her job: helping Team Canada reach the podium.
The last time Clarke, who is also the head coach of the TMU Bold women’s basketball team, went to the Olympics was for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, when the COVID-19 pandemic and a dizzying array of health and safety protocols posed the biggest challenge of all.
Priority number one is to win through COVID, Clarke told TorontoMet Today ahead of the tournament in Tokyo (which was actually played in 2021).
During the Tokyo Olympics, players and coaches were required to wear face masks at all times (except during training), had to stay within the walls of their hotels and training centers, had to report for a mandatory Covid-19 test every morning, and had very limited opportunities to train together before the tournament began.
According to her, Paris 2024 is a completely new event.
I mean, we can socialize and go out to eat together, she said, laughing softly at the novelty of the concept.
“This year I think the opportunity to train more together, to determine the intensity of our schedule, to be able to connect and also to be able to rest and recover properly before the Games start is probably the biggest difference that stands out now,” she said.
