Footballer injured in shooting reportedly takes first steps with stick

SARASOTA, Florida. – Brian Battie, an Auburn running back who previously played football for USF, took his first steps with a cane after he was shot outside a Sarasota hookah bar in May, according to an update on a GoFundMe set up by his family.

The update was posted on Saturday and his family reported that Battie took his first steps with a cane on Tuesday.

“As we witnessed this milestone, our hearts were filled with indescribable happiness and pride. It is a testament to Brian's unwavering strength, resilience and determination. This road has not been easy, but with each small step forward he has shown us the power of perseverance and courage,” his family wrote.

They thanked Sarasota Memorial and Battie's doctors for their contributions to his care and recovery.

“We are beyond grateful to the doctors, medical team, therapists and all of our loved ones who have supported us every step of the way. Your expertise, encouragement and unwavering belief in his potential have been invaluable,” the Battie family said.

Brian Battie was seriously injured when shots rang out at the Tallywood Centre Plaza, located at 3400 17th Street, around 3:30 a.m. on May 18.

Three other people were injured in the shooting and Brian Battie's brother, 24-year-old Tommie Battie, was killed.

Darryl Bernard Brookins was arrested and charged with murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm after the shooting. According to an affidavit of probable cause, video footage shows Brookins walking toward Brian and Tommie Battie before immediately pulling out a gun and shooting the brothers.

Weeks after Auburn football player Brian Battie was seriously injured in a Sarasota County shooting that also took the life of his brother, his family reports he is making progress in what will be a long recovery.

According to the affidavit, both Battie brothers returned fire. At that point, the video shows Brian Battie fall to the ground. Tommie Battie fell to the ground next to him and died from his injuries.

Brian Battie's family is hoping for more “wins and milestones” as he recovers.
