Keeping your eye on the ball just got easier at this London cricket ground
As cricket gains popularity in London, Ontario, a few giant black screens on the city's only real sports field will improve the quality and safety of the game, according to the president of a local club.
Following calls from the local cricket community, council services last week installed the three-metre high 'sight shields' on the north and south sides of the cricket ground at Northridge Fields on Adelaide Street, north of Windermere Road.
As the name suggests, vision screens allow the batter to see the ball better when it is coming at him at speeds of over 100 km/h.
Without the screens, it can be difficult for batsmen to see the white ball coming, said Subhash Sharma, president of the Forest City Riders cricket team, who helped install the new screens.
“I've been playing cricket for 40 or 50 years and I played in India before I came to London 20 years ago. It was a routine job, having a screen on both sides,” he said.
“That's one quality I didn't find here.”
The screens make it easier to see the ball, allowing batsmen to hit it and not get hit. Standard cricket balls are usually red or white with a leather exterior and are extremely hard. Being hit by one can cause serious injury and death.
“I've gotten so many congratulatory emails and phone calls from people all over the league, how happy they are to have this thing installed,” Sharma said.
The city has three cricket grounds, with Northridge Fields being the newest due to open in 2022. There are also slightly smaller grounds at Silverwood Park and the North London Athletic Field.
Despite cricket's growing popularity, the city has not received any requests for privacy screens so far this year, said Jon-Paul McGonigle, the city's director of recreation and sport.
“Once we heard about it and it seemed like the cricket community was supportive of the idea, we immediately started working on that solution,” McGonigle said.
Sharma played a key role in promoting the new privacy screens, he said. The process from application to installation took about six weeks and cost $10,000.
McGonigle added that the city was in talks with the local cricket community, which numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 people. According to Sharma, there are two leagues in the city with a total of 25 teams.
“There will be some things we don't necessarily understand about the game, and [we] “I absolutely want to thank the cricket community for their tremendous efforts in inviting us and educating us,” McGonigle said.
Sharma said he was pleased with the city’s response, which was open to making the pitches cricket-friendly and listened to concerns about the length of the grass (between 15 and 18 millimetres is ideal).
McGonigle said the city is looking at new equipment and is talking to other jurisdictions with more experience.
The city is also considering updating its parks and recreation master plan, which was approved in 2019 but has no future amenity target for cricket.
But cricket's popularity has exploded in the past five years, partly due to the influx of international students to the city, many from India, where the sport has become embedded in the country's identity.
“We have a better understanding of the number of participants and the demand in the city. I think that will give us a better idea of how many cricket grounds we need to build in the future,” McGonigle said.
He added that safety screens may also be installed at other fields in London, but that this is not currently being worked on.
