Tonsilitis forces number one Jannik Sinner to elimination from Olympic tennis tournament
Number one Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Olympic Games in Paris on Wednesday due to tonsillitis.
Sinner, a 22-year-old from Italy, posted on social media that a doctor had advised him to skip the Summer Games. Sinner won the Australian Open in January for his first Grand Slam title and rose to No. 1 in the ATP rankings last month after reaching the semifinals of the French Open.
The draw for Olympic tennis is Thursday. The matches start on Saturday.
“Missing the Olympics is a big disappointment, as it was one of my main goals this season,” Sinner wrote in Italian. “I couldn't wait to have the honor of representing my country in this extremely important event.”
Sinner is replaced in the Italian team by number 207 in the singles Andrea Vavassori and in the doubles by Luciano Darderi, alongside Lorenzo Musetti.
Dane Holger Rune, who is in 16th place, also announced on social media on Wednesday that he is withdrawing. He is said to be suffering from pain in his wrist.
The Summer Games tennis tournament will be held at Roland Garros, site of the annual French Open Grand Slam tournament.
Sinner reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros in June, but lost to Alcaraz, who later won the championship.
Alcaraz, a 21-year-old from Spain, won his fourth Grand Slam trophy this month at Wimbledon, beating Djokovic, a 37-year-old from Serbia. It was the second year in a row that Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the final at the All England Club.
Sinner was eliminated in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.
Rune, 21, was due to make his Olympic debut in Paris.
“I'm really sad that I won't be able to compete in the Olympics. It's something I've been looking forward to playing and being a part of,” Rune wrote on X.
“I have had pain in my wrist during both the clay and grass seasons, so I have to take the medical advice seriously.”
Rune last played last week in Hamburg, Germany, where he retired from the quarter-finals against eventual champion Arthur Fils of France after trailing 6-4 4-1.
