Footwear in cricket: issues faced by podiatrists when treating fast bowlers
Background
The choice of footwear and appropriate fitting of footwear in fast bowling in cricket lacks biomechanical and clinical evidence. This shows that despite professional advice being available, elite fast bowlers continue to wear shoes that may not be suitable for them. The aim of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of three cricket boots commonly used by fast bowlers and whether shoe modification could play a role in injury.
Methods
Four male cricket fast bowlers were included in the study. A VICON Mx system with 20 cameras was used to collect three-dimensional kinematic data. A four-segment marker set was used to track and model the lower limb. Four force platforms (Type 9287 BA, Kistler) were positioned at both the rear and forefoot strikes to record kinetic data. Participants' perception of shoes was measured using a VAS. Freidman two-way ANOVA with post-hoc pairwise comparison was used to analyze the differences between shoes. Linear regression analysis was used to correlate predictive outcome measures.
Results
The custom cross trainer (ASICS 490tr) showed the highest shoe score for participant perception (average 9/10 VAS). The conventional cricket shoes (ASICS 170no) showed a significant reduction in forefoot lateral shear force (P = 0.038) and a significant decrease in the external rotation moment of the anterior knee joint (P = 0.022) compared to the custom shoe (ASICS 490TR). Exploratory regression analyzes revealed that forefoot lateral shear force was significantly correlated (R2 = 0.75, P < 0.001) to the sagittal plane angle of the knee joint at first contact. The angle of the knee joint in the sagittal plane at first contact was also significantly correlated (R2 = 0.73, P < 0.001) to forefoot loading speed.
Conclusions
The findings of this study demonstrate that custom-fitted cricket shoes increase the lateral shear force and external rotation moment of the knee at the foreleg. However, the relationship between these findings and harm remains unquantified. Further research should identify the role of footwear in the mechanism of lower extremity injury in fast bowlers and which footwear characteristics correlate with improved shoe VAS scores regarding comfort, support and performance.
