Johns Hopkins Falls to MIddlebury, 3-1, in NCAA quarterfinals
MIDDLEBURY, VT Host and second-ranked Middlebury defeated fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins 3-1 on Sunday in the NCAA quarterfinals. The Blue Jays finish their season at 19-4, while the Panthers improve to 17-2 and earn a spot in the NCAA Semifinals.
Middlebury opened the scoring midway through the second quarter when the Panthers scored on a corner kick. After crossing the corner kick, Caroline Segal redirected Grace Keefe's shot onto the left post. Hopkins answered with 1:25 to play in the half. Megan Chang intercepted a pass deep in the Panthers' end, dribbled around a defender and then lifted a shot into the top left corner to tie the game at one.
The home side regained the lead after 41:08 when Keefe played a long ball into the circle and Georgianne Defeo tapped it into the cage at the back post. Middlebury added an insurance goal with eight minutes to play from Emma McCann's stick.
Middlebury finished with a 21-5 edge in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corners. Aubrey Kilgore made nine saves and finished with 21 in three NCAA Tournament games. That ranks second in a single tournament by a JHU goaltender.
Hopkins and Middlebury met in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. The three previous meetings took place in the national championship game. JHU's 12 goals scored in the 2024 NCAA Tournament are the most by the Blue Jays in a single tournament.
