Malaga's long relationship with Davis Cup tennis is coming to an end

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is expected to soon announce the host of the 2025 Davis Cup Final 8, which appears to spell the end of Malaga's long relationship with the tournament.
The announcement coincides with the draw for the tournament qualifiers, which will take place from January 31 to February 2.
The ITF has received two major financial offers, with Italy and China reportedly taking the lead. That said, after winning back-to-back titles and hosting the Billie Jean King Cup in 2024, Italy are seen as the favourites.
A successful run
Malaga's three-year stint as host, supported by financial contributions from the city hall, the provincial government and the Andalusian regional government, has revived the competition. The city's ability to attract near-capacity crowds even on weekday mornings has received public praise from the ITF.
The city's proximity to Turin, home of the ATP Finals, and the participation of top players, including last year's Sinner-Djokovic clash, further enhanced its appeal.
However, growing economic supply and concerns about a possible Spanish monopoly have prompted the ITF to consider switching hosts. The shift comes despite Malaga's crucial role in restoring confidence in the tournament during its reformatting phase, which now reflects the traditional structure with the exception of the Final 8.
The ITF's decision excludes two countries from the 2025 qualifiers, with speculation suggesting one could be the defending champions and the other the new host nation. If Italy wins, as expected, the Netherlands as number two could benefit from automatic qualification.
