Washington Alex Ovechkin came in the Chicago Blackhawks three goals in the game on Friday evening for the magical song that did about this hockey season: 895. Two goals would bind the old record of 894, brought back in 1999 by the big wayne Gretzky. A third would break it.

For now, however, a new record will have to wait: Ovechin scored two goals and now shares the record with Gretzky. The Washington Capitals still have six games that are this regular season.

At the age of 39, Oveechkin's strive for the Gretzky goal record drawn the attention of the entire hockey world and the presence of Gretzky himself in the capital of Washington on Friday evening.

Ovechkin's first goal of the night did not even enter the game for four minutes, a one-timer for the net of a pass by teammate Dylan Strome. Then his second classic OVI a Power Play Slapshot was from his 'office', his favorite place on the ice at the left faceoff circle. Then, while the crowd roared and his teammates ricked their sticks on stage, Oveechkin took a round around the ice in the spotlight.

“Every goal seems to be getting bigger and bigger and bigger,” said Strome after the game. “To get that early, and only a matter of time before he got almost a third, a few times, but it is so impressive the way he can open, the way he can score, as he can do it. It is history.”

After the game, the entire Blackhawks team was listed to offer Oveechkin a fist bump, after which Gretzky came to the dressing room of the capitals to congratulate Oveechkin personally.

“What Wayne and O have done for the hockey game can never be replicated,” said right-wing Tom Wilson, who played his own very 12-year-old NHL career next to Oveechkin in Washington. “It was an honor of my career to have a chair in the front row to see him.”

The 41 goals of Ovechkin this season were bound in second place in the competition, although he was sidelined for a month after he broke his leg in a collision with a opponent during a match in November.

And almost every other player on the rankings is a decade younger than Oveechkin, whose lifespan and consistency have put him on a layer that few other players can claim. For most players, scoring 40 or more goals in one season would be a career height for Oveechkin, this is his 14th season that does this. He is the first player in the NHL history that disappoints at least three seasons of 40 goals at the age of 35.

Gretzky claimed the goal record in 1994 for the first time, when he passed Gordie Howe's old record of 801. Gretzky then played five more seasons and eventually retired in 1999 with a career -Totaal of 894 goals.

Like many of Gretzky's records, the target record was once considered inviolable.

Ovechkin was prepared by the Washington Capitals in 2004. He was a scorer from the start, and led the competition in goals in nine different seasons. But where the scoring capacity of many hockey players fades over the years, Oveechkin continued to score. By the time he hit 600 career goals, then 700, commentators and fans wondered if the record of Gretzky could be in sight.

On Friday evening, after the game, the two monumental players were together on a press conference table. The record of 894 career goals has been shared for the time being, at least for a day or two, until the capitals play again.

“When I broke Gordie's record, my father told me that same night:” You would be just as proud as the man who breaks your record, “said Gretzky Friday. “It has really been a wonderful trip for everyone.”

“From belt to howhe, orr, lemieux, messier, you pass it on,” he said. “If someone breaks Alex's record, I hope that Alex is there to shake his hand. But at the moment I hope that Alex enjoys it. And he deserves all the honor and praises he gets.”
