Former Australian star David Hussey is stepping down as Victoria’s head of men’s cricket after four years in the role for a role in global player development and coaching.
Hussey departs after a strong period for the men’s state team, which saw them reach three Sheffield Shield finals and a national one-day final, albeit without lifting any silverware.
Hussey, 48, who was appointed CV’s head of male cricket in September 2022, has decided it is time for a new voice in the programme.
Hussey will remain with CV in what the state association describes as an “exciting new global venture”. The initiative includes setting up cricket academies in Melbourne, India and possibly the US.
CV has a partnership with the San Francisco Unicorns in the US Major League Cricket T20 domestic competition.
Under the triumvirate of Hussey, coach Chris Rogers and cricket boss Graham Manou, the Vics have unearthed young stars Ollie Peake and Campbell Kellaway, who are being touted as future Australian representatives, while spinner Todd Murphy has broken into the Test team and is Nathan Lyon’s long-term replacement.
Victoria topped the Shield table last season but lost the final to South Australia at the Junction Oval.
A hard-hitting batsman, Hussey was one of the central figures in Victoria’s dominance of domestic cricket in the 2000s and 2010s, when the state claimed seven Shield titles.
Hussey was unlucky not to wear the wide green, despite a first-class average of 52.50, and played 69 one-day internationals and 39 T20s for Australia.
He was praised by CV for the high standards, strong culture and results on the field he drove.
