Predators sign Mavrik Bourque to six-year deal – Pro Hockey Rumors
The Predators have signed a restricted free agent center Mavrik Bourque to a six-year deal worth $5.5 million per year, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. Nashville’s cap space drops to $8.25 million once the signing is completed, per PuckPedia. The contract does not include any signing bonus money or trade protection, per PuckPedia. Bourque will earn $4.5 million in 2026-27 and 2027-28, $5.5 million in 2028-29, $6.5 million in 2029-30 and 2030-31 and $6.5 million in 2031-32.
Bourque cashes in on his first long-term deal three days after Nashville paid a second- and third-round pick to acquire his signing rights, plus defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin of the cap-tied stars. If Nashville had submitted this contract as an offer sheet instead, it would have cost them a first and a third, so they ultimately come out on top here.
The 24-year-old Bourque, selected 30th overall in 2020, started to come into his own last season in Dallas. In his second season, he scored 20 goals and 41 points while seeing significant time on the wing in the Stars’ top six with Jason Robertson And Wyatt Johnston. As a natural center, he is winning just 45.8% of his draws for his career to date.
Bourque has turned the elite offense upside down at the juniors and minors. He had 71 points in just 49 games for QMJHL Shawinigan in his draft year and was named the AHL’s Most Valuable Player in 2023-24 as a second-year pro, leading the league with 77 points in 71 games for the Texas Stars. However, it’s been difficult for him to get much on the power play against a big Dallas team, and he’s still confident in his shot, averaging fewer than 1.5 shots on goal per game in each of his two full NHL seasons.
There’s still time for Bourque’s offensive game to fully arrive, and Nashville is banking on that happening this year, with a likely spot on their second power-play unit waiting for him. Whether he will play at center or on the wing remains to be seen, but there is a top-six job at even strength and his name is written all over it too. He shot above 13% in both of his NHL seasons, so there is legitimate 30-40 goal potential if he can maintain that accuracy while increasing his volume.
What is already well known is Bourque’s defensive impact. The possession has swung significantly in Dallas’ favor over the past two years while Bourque has been on the ice, with relative Corsi shares of +3.5% and +5.4%. That’s when Bourque starts under half his shifts in the offensive zone. He should fit in well on a Predators team that was around league average in terms of possession last season.
The deal obviously gives Bourque unrestricted free agency. It will take place after the 2031-2032 season, when he will be 30 years old and will buy out three UFA years. Given the rapidly inflating market, $5.5 million for a center who has already established himself as a third player with plenty of room to grow is a solid bet.
Nashville doesn’t have many long-term deals on the books. He joins Jack Drury, Brady SkeiAnd Her in Saros as the only Preds to sign after the end of the decade. With a number of potential major deals for RFAs now pending Luke Evangelista And Matthew Wood on the horizon over the next twelve months, gaining long-term cost certainty with Bourque is smart work from new managing director Chris MacFarland.
