Tennis ‘Racket and heart’ as Djokovic tames Auger-Aliassime and returns to Wimbledon semi-finals | WTVB | 1590 AM · 95.5 FM

LONDON, July 7 (Reuters) – Novak Djokovic reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon after beating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(10) 3-6 6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(10-4) in an epic battle to set up a showdown with reigning champion Jannik Sinner.
After surpassing Roger Federer for the most match wins at the All England Club with his 106th victory in the final round, the 39-year-old eclipsed the Swiss again to become the first man to reach the last four eight times in a row.
Djokovic got there by enduring the longest quarter-final in Wimbledon history, at five hours and 15 minutes, with a courageous display against a determined opponent who proved difficult to beat for much of the match.
“I won with a racket and a lot of heart,” Djokovic said.
“I think it’s the control of the nerves and the extreme tension you feel in these types of matches. Towards the end it was everyone’s game. The score was completely even. It was everyone’s game in the super tiebreak in the fifth.”
“What can I say? I mean, these are the kind of moments I still play tennis for. I wish it was the final, you know, so I don’t have to worry about how my body is going to feel tomorrow. But yeah… I’m glad I won.”
ANOTHER BLOCKBUSTER CLASH WITH SINNER
Djokovic’s pursuit of an eighth crown to equal retired rival Federer and a 25th major trophy to surpass Australia’s Margaret Court will continue when he meets Sinner in what promises to be another blockbuster chapter in their rivalry.
“It’s just another semi-final for me. I’m going to look at the numbers and stuff when I finish my career,” he said.
“Right now it’s all business. I still have to recover. I’m still in the tournament and in a few days I’ll have the best player in the world.”
Djokovic, the seventh seed, chuckled after several missed chances in a long tiebreak in the opening set, and had the last laugh when Auger-Aliassime fired a volley long to surrender a set he should have won comfortably.
A double fault from Djokovic gave Auger-Aliassime a break to lead 5–3 in the next set and the Canadian held his nerve and served in the next game to level the match, before the Center Court roof was closed at around 7.40pm local time.
DJOKOVIC COMPOSED AFTER COMPLAINTS
The move led to complaints from Djokovic, but he composed himself as the third set got underway, producing cleaner ball strikes to finally break Auger-Aliassime in the sixth game and subsequently consolidate his grip on the match.
Auger-Aliassime lost his opening service game in the fourth set and let his frustrations boil over when he hit his chair with his racket, but put in a brave performance and leveled through the tiebreak to force a decider.
For 12 games of the final set, there was no separation between the pair until Djokovic used his experience in the match tiebreak to finally overcome Auger-Aliassime to the deafening applause of a thoroughly entertained crowd.
“You know, I told my kids to go to sleep after the fourth set, but they didn’t want to listen,” Djokovic added.
“I’m glad they stayed because it was, honestly, one of the best games I’ve been part of in my career on this field.”
