Nigel Farage, leader of Britain’s right-wing Reform UK Party, announced on Tuesday that he would resign from parliament to fight a ‘people versus establishment’ by-election.

Farage, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump and a prominent figure in British politics, resigned from his seat as criticism over his financial problems grew.

Farage has been under investigation by Britain’s parliamentary standards commissioner since May after failing to declare a 5 million pound ($6.7 million) donation from cryptocurrency investor and Reform Party donor Christopher Harborne ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Over the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that the reform leader had also received financial support from political ally George Cottrell, who was convicted of wire fraud in the US in 2017.

In a statement on Tuesday, Farage said the council’s standards were being used as a “political tool” against him, adding that Clacton, his constituency, should be the “judge”.

After previously describing the investigation into his finances as “a blow to the company”, Farage said: “The establishment has now decided they can’t beat us fairly. They have decided to use nefarious means.”

Trump appeared to support Farage on Monday, posting an article on Truth Social titled “They’re running the 2024 anti-Trump playbook on Nigel Farage.”

This comes despite suggestions that a rift had emerged between the pair in recent months after Farage failed to secure a meeting with the president when he visited Mar-a-Lago in March.

Farage has led the populist right-wing British Reform Party since 2024 after being elected to parliament in that year’s general election.

The Reform Party has been ahead in most British opinion polls since April 2025, suggesting the party is likely to win Britain’s next general election, scheduled for no later than August 15, 2029, and form the next government with Farage as Prime Minister.

Farage, a key figure in Britain’s campaign to leave the European Union, previously served as a member of the European Parliament, where he developed a reputation as a fierce critic of the EU and its institutions.

He previously led the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) from 2006 to 2009 and from 2010 to 2016, before resigning as leader following the successful Brexit vote.
