Materials Processing Laboratory Leads National Green Steel Hydrogen Pilot Project

The Materials Processing Institute is leading an exciting 270,000 projects this summer to demonstrate green steel innovation in the UK.

It will replace the coke and other polluted fossil fuels that currently power traditional iron furnaces with hydrogen and electricity, creating a low carbon steel industry.

The project, codenamed H2DRI, focuses on how to scale up the process and builds a practical and scientific understanding of the best ways to achieve economically and environmentally sustainable green steelmaking.

Part of the government’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio Industrial Fuel Switching Competition, which funds low-carbon technologies and systems, the project is a steel metal from electrical technology developers C-Tech Innovation, Teesside University, and Swansea University. It is led by the institute in cooperation with the institute. And Rio Tinto, a global metal and mining company.

In addition, they work with larger industrial interest groups consisting of supply chain businesses, including steelmakers, steelmakers, and energy developers.

The first part of the project will include a pre-development feasibility study of a permanent and accessible national pilot production facility.
