Apple loses position as world's largest mobile phone maker as rivals eat into sales

Apple has lost its position as the world's top smartphone maker by revenue as Chinese rivals eat into market share.

iPhone sales fell 9.6% to about 50 million units in the first three months of this year, while shipments by Chinese challengers soared, according to analysts at IDC.

Beijing-based rival Xiaomi increased its mobile phone shipments by 33.8 percent, and Chinese low-cost technology brand Transsion increased sales by 84 percent.

As a result, apple market share declined to 17.3% in the first three months of 2024, compared to 20.7% in the same period last year.

IDC vice president Ryan Reese said Huawei's resurgence in China and Xiaomi's significant gains are making it increasingly difficult for Apple and its main rival Samsung.

South Korea's Samsung fared better than Apple, taking the top spot as the world's most popular smartphone brand by sales, according to IDC.

Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, said: Although the top two companies both recorded negative growth in the first quarter, Samsung appears to be in a stronger position overall than it has been in recent quarters.

Over the past decade, Samsung has consistently held the top spot as the world's largest seller of smartphones. However, Apple surpassed its rivals in late 2023 after the launch of its latest flagship devices, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.
