Google launches $250,000 bug bounty contest for VM hypervisor

Google launches $250,000 bug bounty contest for VM hypervisor

Google has launched a Vulnerability Reward Program (VRP) to incentivize people to find security holes in the open source Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor, with a first place prize of up to $250,000. The VRP is set up as a capture-the-flag competition, where testers log in as guests and try to find zero-day vulnerabilities in the KVM host kernel.

KVM is an open source project to which Google actively contributes and has been part of Linux mainline since 2007. KVM enables Intel or AMD powered devices to run multiple virtual machines (VMs) with hardware emulation that can be customized to support multiple legacy operating systems. Google uses KVM in its Android and Google Cloud platforms and therefore has a vested interest in keeping KVM secure.

First announced in October last year, the “kvmCTF” competition officially kicked off on June 27. Participants book a time slot (in UTC format) to log into a guest VM running on a bare metal host and attempt a guest-to-host attack.

“The objective of the attack must be to exploit a zero-day vulnerability in the host kernel's KVM subsystem,” Google's competition launch post states. As such, vulnerabilities occurring in the QEMU emulator or that rely on host-to-KVM technology are not covered in the competition. The full rules detail the entire process, from how to download the necessary files to how to properly prove the success of the exploit.

The reward list was published in a June 27th entry on the Google Security Blog.

Any memory write: $100,000

Arbitrary memory read: $50,000

Relative memory writes: $50,000

Denial of service: $20,000

Relative memory reads: $10,000

The rewards do not stack, ethical hackers only get the final tier reward, not any intermediate tier rewards, and only the first successful submission will earn rewards, which according to discussion on the kvmCTF Discord channel is closed to submissions at the time of writing.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
