Demand for AI increases Google's carbon footprint

Google has set a goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, but artificial intelligence poses an energy-intensive obstacle to that goal.

Apple has fixed several security issues in its devices this year.

In its 2024 Environmental Report, the internet search giant said its carbon dioxide emissions in 2023 increased by about 50% compared to 2019. Year-over-year, emissions were 13% higher than in 2022. The spike in emissions was driven by the large amount of energy required to power its data centers and supply chain operations to power and drive its AI initiatives.

Google isn't the only company grappling with the unsustainable energy demands of keeping its AI systems running. Several leading tech companies, including Amazon Web Services, are turning to nuclear power to fuel their projects. In fact, one-third of U.S. nuclear plants have signed contracts with tech companies to power the data centers that run key AI models, The Wall Street Journal reported.

For Google, rising emissions run counter to its environmental goals: the company said in the report that it plans to turn to carbon removal to offset rising emissions, a move that has itself been controversial.

While 2023 is the first year of implementing the company's carbon removal strategy and there's still a long way to go to reach its 2030 target, the company has begun building impactful partnerships and contracting carbon removal credits, Google said in the report.
