Montana, North Dakota tech hubs receive federal funding

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – More federal grants have been announced to support regional tech hubs in Montana and North Dakota.

Montana's Headwaters Tech Hub will focus on photonics, the science of manipulating and detecting light and quantum computing.

The Economic Development Administration has provided $41 million to support innovation in these areas.

“I believe this bill will create good-paying jobs in our state and give Montana's top entrepreneurs the tools they need to solve the world's most pressing technology and national security challenges,” said Sen. Jon Tester, D-Montana.

“Montana leads the nation in technological innovation, which will help us compete with China, create good-paying jobs at home, and further boost our economy. From optics and photonics to quantum computing, I'm pleased to help advance Montana's capabilities to further contribute to the critical research, development and jobs that strengthen our national security and help our nation remain globally competitive,” said Senator Steve Daines (R-MT).

About $1.5 million of that will go to Grand Farm in North Dakota, which has partnered with the tech hub.

Autonomous farms are exploring how photon sensing systems can work with drones and robots in the agricultural industry.

“This shows how we can continue to leverage more resources as we move forward and lead the nation in precision agriculture,” said Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.).

The designation was awarded to Montana in October 2023 as part of the CHIPS and Science Act, which created 31 tech hubs.

Headwaters Tech Hub is made up of a consortium of 27 companies, including Grand Farm, Montana State University, the University of Montana, John Deere and RDO Equipment.
