Google Play services updates for Android Lollipop stopped

Google announced today that it will stop updating Google Play services for Android Lollipop devices. Android 5.0 became stable in November 2014, and Lollipop accounted for less than 1% of active devices.

The first iteration of Material Design was introduced to Android in March 2015, followed by 5.1 Lollipop.

Even though Android phones and tablets no longer receive monthly OS updates and security patches, they will continue to receive new versions of Google Play services, the backend services that power many first-party features such as backups and two-factor authentication, as well as other features for app developers.

Google will stop Play Services updates for Android versions with low active device accounts — currently less than 1% are on Lollipop (API levels 21 and 22). Dropping support will allow the company to focus on devices with more powerful hardware and newer underlying operating systems that support the latest features.

Once these updates are over, Android Lollipop devices will continue to work, but “they won't receive new features or important security updates, and may be incompatible with some apps that rely on Google services.” Last July, Play Services ended support for Android 4.4 KitKat.

Google Play services updates are currently available for Android 6.0 (API level 23) and above.

Android Lollipop was first released in November 2014, nearly 10 years ago. Since then, we've introduced many innovative improvements and features for Android that were not available in Lollipop.
