According to a report from 9to5 Google, Google is testing a new AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature after previewing it at Google I/O 2024. The feature allows users to search for photos from their photo library using natural language without having to organize or tag the images. Google has not yet confirmed a release date for the feature, but the report says that the company is currently testing it with select groups.

The feature will appear in the Search tab of the Google Photos app as a “Ask a question” button with the Gemini logo next to the search bar. Previously, Google displayed the feature as a separate tab within the app, but the design has now been changed, the report revealed. The feature also includes a new page, allowing users to name more people who appear in their library.

Google Photos has some search capabilities, but employing the Geminis AI model will narrow searches even further, allowing you to identify photos taken in the same location, search for people from different time periods, and organize based on a range of criteria.

Google has been gradually rolling out Gemini-powered features to all aspects of Android phones, most recently making it easy to chat with a bot even when your phone is locked.
