Tokyo Olympics earthquake shakes media, but no damage or delay reported – Deadline

Is nature conspiring against the Tokyo Olympics? Firstly, the event has been postponed due to the Covid pandemic. Then, with the games continuing despite a widespread resurgence of the virus, a typhoon hit the Japanese capital last week. Temperatures and humidity were uncomfortably high, and today a 5.8-magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks hit the area.

Note to Mt. Fuji: Please stay calm.

No disturbances of events or serious damage were reported from any of the offshore earthquakes, which ranged between 4.1 and 5.8 on the Richter scale, and local authorities have ruled out a tsunami risk for the city that is part of the infamous “ring of fire.” But the city’s media to cover the Games of the XXXII Olympiad weighed in on social media about the shaking that was reported around 5:33 a.m. Wednesday local time.

“Rolled over for 20 seconds,” NBC News anchor Lester Holt wrote in a tweet. “Interestingly, my crew of 3 floors below felt nothing.” CNN’s Will Ripley wrote, “I felt the shaking for about 30 seconds. It’s still running.”

Sunrise, a local morning show on Australia’s Seven Network, was taking off straight from Tokyo after a commercial break when the main earthquake struck. But broadcaster Mark Beretta was, well, unmoved. “We’re up to about 10 floors,” he told broadcasters. “We are in a tower that is made at home by scaffolding, but it is made of structural steel because it is earthquake-resistant. But it actually started swaying and moving.”

Beretta kept calm, though noticing that it was his first earthquake. Below is the show’s tweet, followed by those from Holt, Ripley and others including a local reporter in Toledo, Ohio, joking about the quake’s abnormal origin.

I felt what seemed to be a slight earthquake here in Tokyo. About 5:33 a.m. Wednesday here. Rolled for a good 20 seconds. Interestingly enough, my crew of 3 floors below felt nothing. The Japan Meteorological Agency averages 6.0 degrees.

Two earthquakes were felt at 5:33 a.m. and 5:43 a.m. (local time) off the coast of Hasaki, Japan, in Tokyo, where the Summer Olympics are being held. The USGS says it recorded strengths of 5.8 and 5.1. About 75 miles offshore and 6 miles deep. No damage or tsunami warning. https://t.co/TNIbOxYPdG

An earthquake of magnitude 6 struck eastern Japan and was felt by people at the #Olympics. Meteorologists suspect this was caused by aftershocks from the shot fired at the games. #FirstAlert pic.twitter.com/BpL09OTRHm

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
