A 3.9-magnitude earthquake was felt in eastern Saskatchewan late Tuesday.

Earthquakes Canada recorded the seismic activity as starting just after 10:30 p.m., and centered in an area about 35 kilometers southeast of Esterhazy. The Federal Monitoring Service’s website noted there were no reports of damage, adding that “nothing would be expected.”

Some residents took to a forum on the volcanodiscovery.com website to describe how they felt their homes briefly shake in the area around Gaspey Hill, near the epicenter.

One commenter wrote: “I thought something very big hit our house.”

The area around Esterhazy is no stranger to earthquakes of similar size; A 4.1-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter 17 km east of the city was felt by residents on August 15, 2019, and a 3.8 earthquake reported on September 5, 2016, with an epicenter about 14 km northeast of the city.

There are no fault lines in the area. In a 2019 interview with Postmedia, seismologist Alison Baird, then of the Canadian Geological Survey, cited mining activity as a possible source of earthquakes in the area. A phenomenon known as postglacial rebounds, where land masses rise over thousands of years after ice sheets melt, has also been linked to earthquakes.

In 1909, an area stretching from Stefan north to Yorkton and as far west as the Swift Current experienced a magnitude 5.5 earthquake and is still the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in the county. I felt it as far south as Montana and as far east as Ottawa.

Esterhazy is located about 225 km northeast of Regina.
