Shang Qi secretly hinted at a Korean avenger

Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings subtly hints at the possibility of a new superhero and a Korean avenger in the original comics.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings alluded to the Korean Avenger, the White Fox. There is a feeling that setting is the secret to Marvel’s success; 2008’s Iron Man ended with the promise of the Avengers Initiative, a shared world in which many superheroes team up to face an even greater threat. Every successive MCU movie hit has been filled with setting — sometimes candid, sometimes more subtle, and Shang-Chi’s last tip is no different.

Take Iron Man 2, for example. One of the most memorable scenes of SHIELD’s map of peril featured in the background, which founded the fictional African nation of Wakanda—eight years before Black Panther resurrected that country on the big screen—as well as Atlantis, home of Prince Namor the Sub-Sailor. There was the other apparent Namor Easter egg in Avengers: Endgame, with dialogue calling for an underwater earthquake that most viewers assumed was a setting. The film’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, seemed a little amused when asked about him on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, suggesting that the setting can sometimes be in the eye of the beholder. “Some might interpret it that way,” said Anthony Russo, while his brother Joe introduced the vague word “maybe” with a smile. This highlights how the suggestion of a future setup is intrinsic in the MCU.

Although it doesn’t comment like an underwater earthquake, Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings features another, more subtle respawn in the MCU Easter. The film introduced viewers to a secret dimension called Ta Lo, inhabited by creatures from Chinese mythology such as húlijīng, a legendary nine-tailed fox. These fox spirits – sometimes malicious, sometimes benevolent – are common in Chinese folklore, and neighboring countries have adopted the traditions surrounding them with their own transformations. In Korea, húlijīng has become an even more evil kumiho – and Marvel Comics capitalized on the legend of the kumiho when they created White Fox, a superhero who serves as one of the Avengers in Korea.

Both húlijīng and kumiho are traditionally depicted as mutants, and in Marvel Comics the kumiho was an expert on fantasies who tempted humans in order to have their hearts licked off. White Fox is the daughter of a Kumiho man and woman, who grew up in the remote Kumiho village in Chungcheongnam-do Province. One day, she unwisely tried to play some game with human children, and showed her nine tails; They panicked, told their parents, and the result was a tragic massacre. However, this early experience of hatred did not break White Fox’s soul, and she went on to become the leader of the Avengers Tiger Squad in Korea. White Fox was created by Marvel Comics in an effort to increase its reach with Korean readers, and it first appeared in the webtoon Avengers: Electric Rain. It didn’t take long for the publisher to make it into mainstream American comics, and Marvel seems to be pushing it hard at the moment; She recently teamed up with Black Cat, as well as being associated with the Death of Doctor Strange event.

The MCU setting may not have been intentional – the visit to Ta-Lo included plenty of other mythical Chinese creatures – but nonetheless it does mean that there is indeed a possibility to bring White Fox to life as part of this shared universe. Phases of the first three MCU blockbusters focused on the United States, but Phase 4 is international in scope, with Shang-Chi himself Marvel Studios’ first Asian superhero. It would be great if Marvel could follow up on the success of Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings, introducing other characters like White Fox and members of the Tiger Division.
