Meteor explosion rocks Indiana Void

At 12:44 p.m. EDT (1744 GMT) on Wednesday, March 30, residents of Bloomington, Indiana, and surrounding counties were completely shaken by the sound of a powerful explosion.

Soon, locals took to social media for answers, but they found the source of the turmoil far more out of the ordinary than the usual turmoil in their small town – a meteor just exploded over their heads.

What did they discover? The explosion turned out to be a stray fireball.

A local Facebook group is literally titled “What’s the hype?” It was one of the many places people flocked to, rife with speculation about the source of the explosive sound, which was reported to have been heard for several tens of miles away. Comments on a post by local resident Adrienne Evans Fernandez quickly piled up with rumors of fires at a nearby naval base, military tests, a car accident and more. But none of those were true.

Leave people confused. Even local emergency responders, who helped stamp out some of the bloated rumors, were baffled, having sent out several patrols in search of a cause.

Evans Fernandez, who was the first to ask the question in “What is this noise?” group, told Space.com that her thoughts jumped straight to the possibility of an earthquake. “I actually thought for a moment that it was [primary wave] We are always supposed to be prepared for an earthquake.”

And Evans Fernandez wasn’t alone. At the time, I was also working in my house in Bloomington when an explosion really shook the windows seemed to permeate my entire house. Startled, I jumped thinking that maybe a tree or a large limb had crashed into my roof. A quick check, delightfully captured by the security camera at the front door, ruled out any falling objects, and I was willing to accept “a small earthquake” as the answer to that conundrum as well.

In fact, seismometers at Indiana University picked up a beep that coincided with reports of the explosive sound, but the USGS did not detect any seismic events in the area.

Commentator Nancy Lee, commentator on Evans Fernandez’s initial online post, also recorded footage of the event with her Ring camera, which was able to capture the “boom”.

Residents, reporters and emergency officials were left staring at the sky wondering what the explosive “bang” could be on the ground. Unfortunately, the cloudy sky did not provide any other clues. If it had been a clearer day, perhaps the answer to everyone’s question would have been realized much sooner.

However, some lucky breaks in the clouds have lined up perfectly for at least a few people. Twelve reports have been submitted to the American Meteor Society, spanning over a hundred miles, detailing accounts of the descent of a fireball and its trajectory northward, as the outer space object made its way over northern Kentucky toward Indianapolis.

These chance sightings eventually helped solve the mystery of the “boom” over Indiana which, as it turned out, was a “fireball”, sometimes called a polylid, a bright meteor making its way through Earth’s atmosphere from space (and burning up along the way) .

Fireball sightings are not entirely uncommon, and this event is actually similar to the meteor spotted over Chelyabinsk in 2013. The loud “boom” sound heard by many like myself was likely the result of a meteor explosion touching thicker regions of Earth’s atmosphere, which is A phenomenon known as “air blast”.

However, should that happen again, I’ll be more careful to keep my eyes looking up on clear days from now on. If it weren’t for the clouds, I could have seen the meteor out the window on the very desk where I’m writing this story. What a sight it could have been.
