San Jose Earthquakes may build public football fields at the county fairgrounds

The San Jose Earthquakes may build one or more public football fields at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds if they enter into a deal with the county that also allows them to build at least one training ground for the team.

The Earthquakes will continue to play at PayPal Park near Mineta San Jose International Airport, a 15-minute drive north of the fairgrounds.

Public Fields are located on 18 acres of the southwest corner of the fairgrounds on Amberger Road near Chavez’s supermarket and the Best Western Hotel in the city’s Spartan Keys neighborhood. The site is currently in use by a variety of trucking, landscape, and recycling companies whose licenses expire at the end of the year.

The closest public football grounds to the fairgrounds are about one mile north on Monterey Road. This facility, called The Park San Jose, costs nearly $100 to rent. Solari Park is three miles to the south, which currently requires passes for football matches.

Abe Andrade, executive director of the county fairgrounds, called the earthquake proposal a “positive” one for the region.

“It will definitely provide some great improvement to the neighborhoods around us,” Andrade said, adding that Seismic is also looking at building exercise facilities there for the team.

Andrade said it was too early to say how much it would cost to build the public fields. A spokesperson for the Major League Soccer team did not respond to a request for comment.

With the addition of fields, the county fairgrounds could soon be known as a sports haven.

The county is negotiating with Major League Cricket for a $50 million, 15,000-seat “world-class” stadium for the city’s number one cricket team. Plans call for the stadium to occupy less than one-tenth of the fairground’s 165-acre, empty parking lot across from Franklin Elementary School. According to the Cricket League, the stadium is expected to be completed in 2024. The venue was chosen by the league due to the popularity of the sport among the population of the widespread area in Southeast Asia.

County fairs have been held annually at the fairgrounds since 1944. More recently, the grounds have been used as a primary site for COVID-19 testing. The fairground also hosts a paintball arena and temporary homeless shelter for about 60 people.

Two recent county fairs have been canceled or scaled back due to the pandemic — and next year’s fair will also be scaled back in July.
