Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Malawi in Nsange city, felt in many parts of the southern region – Malawi Nyasa Times

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that Malawi experienced a 5.0-magnitude earthquake in Nsanji around 12:43 am on Thursday and tremor was felt in many parts of the southern region.

GFZ reported that the Nsanje earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km below the epicenter, saying that shallow earthquakes are more strongly felt than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface.

“The exact size, focus, and depth of the earthquake may be reviewed within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and improve their calculations, or when other agencies release their report,” GFZ said.

A second report was later issued by the Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a 5.0 magnitude earthquake as well as others reporting the same earthquake, including the RaspberryShake Citizen Seismograph Network of the same magnitude 5.0 and European. The Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) has a magnitude of 5.1.

“Based on the initial seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any significant damage, but it may have been felt by many people as a slight shaking in the epicenter area.”

The report further said that the weak tremor may have been felt by the rest of Nsanji, 39 km from the epicenter, and Melang, 102 km away.

“Volcano Discovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these changes change and follow up if other important news about the earthquake becomes available,” the report said.

The Malawi government has not yet announced whether the earthquake caused some damage or loss of life.

In 2018, Nsanji was also hit by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake, the strongest since the sequence of earthquakes that hit Karonga in 2009 and lasted about 10 seconds.

According to the information published by the US Geological Survey’s National Seismic Information, the epicenter of this earthquake was in Mozambique, only 25 km from Nsanji, which lasted about 15 seconds.

The earthquake of this earthquake was also felt by the residents in different parts of the southern region reaching Blantyre and Zumba which are located about 115 kilometers and 150 kilometers from the epicenter.

Malawi is located in the Great East African Rift System (EARS), a 3,000 km continental fault that extends from the Afar Triple Junction between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East, to western Mozambique.

It is the world’s only fault system that is active at a continental scale, providing geologists with a view of how continental faults have evolved over time into oceanic spreading centers such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
