Caltech BHU VC Prof Sudhir K Jain Bags Award 2022

Each year, Caltech issues a list of its distinguished alumni, the institute’s highest honor, in recognition of their personal and professional accomplishments that have produced a noteworthy impact in a field, community, or community. Professor Jain received his graduate degree in 1980 and his Ph.D. in earthquake engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1983.

In a report published on its website, the institute described Professor Jain as a successful and active university administrator for earthquake safety. Professor Sudhir K Jain is known for his life-saving influence as India’s preeminent earthquake engineer, for his research, advocacy, creation of training programs for engineers and seismic construction bases, and for his leadership in higher education, first at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) and then at Banaras Hindu University.

The report pays tribute to Professor Jain’s contribution as the founding director of IIT Gandhinagar and as a faculty member of IIT Kanpur. The report adds that his extensive studies after major earthquakes had a major impact on Indian building practices through his development of seismic codes as well as the first major continuing education program for professional engineers.
