Indian Ocean tsunami warning after 6.1 earthquake strikes East Timor coast | world News

New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck off the coast of East Timor on Friday (May 27, 2022), the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said. The earthquakes prompted some people in the capital, Dili, to flee buildings. Although there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, witnesses said the quake was felt strong. Agence France-Presse reported that an advisory group on the tsunami said the earthquake “may be able to cause tsunami waves to affect the Indian Ocean region.” A tsunami warning for the region was issued by the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS).

However, the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake occurred at a depth of 51.4 kilometers (32 miles) off the eastern tip of Timor Island, which is divided between East Timor and Indonesia.

Officials said a risk assessment of the earthquake’s effects was underway.
