Researchers discover Adelaide is at risk of ‘devastating’ earthquakes

Scientists who were investigating ancient seismic signs near Adelaide discovered earthquakes of magnitude 6.0-7.0 likely in the region.

The Adelaide region is one of the most seismically active areas in Australia, overriding bottom faults including the Willunga fault about 40 kilometers south of Adelaide – the focus of investigations.

Australia seismologist Dr Dan Clark said that although no earthquakes of this magnitude have been recorded in the recent history of the Willunga Fault, there is the potential for an earthquake.

“What we were looking for is evidence in the geological record of earthquakes of between 6.5 and 7.2 magnitude,” he said.

“Although no earthquakes of this size have occurred on this fault in recorded history, previous work led by the University of Melbourne has revealed evidence of many large earthquakes occurring on this fault during the past hundreds of thousands of years.

“We calculate that the active length of this 55-kilometre fault could host a 7.2-magnitude earthquake,” he said.

An earthquake of this magnitude would release about 30 times more energy than the Christchurch earthquake in 2011.

Since Adelaide is home to heritage buildings that would be more susceptible to strong ground shaking than an earthquake as large as Christchurch, the research aims to help determine the impacts that could occur in Adelaide.

“What we were trying to determine is how often earthquakes have occurred on this fault in the past, how large they were, and what this could mean for the people of Adelaide today,” said Dr Clark.
