What to watch as Nashville SC returns to action at GEODIS Park vs. San Jose Earthquakes

After a two-week layoff, Nashville SC (6W-4L-4D, 22 points) is finally back in action.

The Boys with Gold returned to Geodes Park on Saturday evening to face the San Jose Earthquakes (3W-6L-5D, 14 points) in a nationally televised game at 7 p.m. CT. It’s Nashville’s first game since they went out on the road and beat Colorado Rapids 3-1 on May 28.

Nashville SC returns to GEODIS Park for its sixth game ever in the building across all competitions since it opened May 1 this year. The Boys in Gold are currently riding the longest active streak on home undefeated MLS at 24 games. The team has a record of 3W-0L-2D in the new stadium and has scored two or more goals in all but one of the matches.

Saturday’s game is also Pride Night in Nashville SC, to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and raise funds to support programming and advocacy initiatives focused on diversity, equity and inclusion. A special Pride Night ticket package is available here.

Fresh and vibrant – After a string of games in May, Nashville’s players and staff got time to recover during the international break.

With some time off the field, the boys in gold are back in training in good shape and ready to go, according to coach Gary Smith.

“Those eight games in 28 days took a slight toll, both physically and emotionally, on the players,” Smith said. “We finished it off on a great note and then had a few days of rest and recovery. We’re back to work at a very decent level. The guys are in good spirits, you can imagine. They’ve spent time with the family, and now they’re back and fully rejuvenated and looking forward to a completely different look for the next leg of the schedule, With three out of four league games being at home. It gives us a chance to try to go up front and take advantage of these matches at home.”

Homecoming Again – Nashville SC has made GEODIS Park a comfortable home in its first month in the new building, racking up three wins and two draws in all competitions. The team continued its strong form at home over the past two seasons, having outperformed its opponents 51-25 in its last 24 home matches.

Smith said the extension of upcoming home games is an important part of the schedule during the summer heat.

“We have 40% of [the season] “It’s in a good position, but that’s where the job gets done,” Smith said. “We can’t rest on our laurels whatsoever. We have three at home in the next four and we want to build on that.”

SAN JOSE RIMACH – The Boys in Gold will face earthquakes for the second time in their history on Saturday. The first game came on April 16 in a 2-2 draw on the road at PayPal Park. Midfielder Hani Mokhtar scored a double in the tie.

Since that match, the Earthquakes have changed coaches and are unbeaten in all but two of their league games. Striker Jeremy Ibobisi is tied for MLS lead with nine goals so far this season.

Smith says he’s ready for a tough test against San Jose the second time around.

“The disappointment arose from the fact that we didn’t get over them,” Smith said. “It was nothing else. They are a very talented team ahead. The mistake a lot of teams make is to look at the league position or the number of goals the team conceded and say this could be an easy ride. It would be anything but. … Are we confident and capable of playing at home? Definitely. We are looking forward to trying and getting as many points as possible.”
