Afghanistan earthquake kills at least 950 officials

A strong earthquake hit Afghanistan early Wednesday morning, killing at least 950 people, according to officials.

The earthquake, measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, struck about 46 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost, not far from the country’s border with Pakistan, at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). .

The US Geological Survey said a second earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck about 49 km southwest of Khost about an hour later.

Earlier, officials reported more than 280 deaths, but the death list has been revised as information pours in from remote mountain villages.

Disaster management officials said at least 950 people were killed, according to Reuters.

Most of the confirmed deaths were in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika, Salah al-Din al-Ayoubi, an official at the Ministry of Interior told the agency.

“The death toll is likely to rise because some villages are located in remote areas in the mountains and it will take some time to gather the details,” Al-Ayoubi said.

He added that the authorities launched a rescue operation, and helicopters were used to reach the wounded and receive medical supplies and food.

The state-run Bakhtar news agency reported that more than 600 people were injured.

Pictures posted by Bakhtar on social media showed houses reduced to rubble and corpses covered with blankets.

The agency published a video on Twitter that it said showed a helicopter landing in the earthquake-hit area to transport the injured to hospitals.

The director general of the news agency, Abdul Wahed Rayan, wrote on Twitter that 90 houses had been destroyed in Paktika, and dozens were believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, said in a tweet on Twitter, “A strong earthquake shook four districts of Paktika province, killing and wounding hundreds of our compatriots and destroying dozens of homes.

“We urge all relief agencies to send teams to the area immediately to prevent further disaster,” he added.

Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN resident coordinator in Afghanistan, said UN agencies were responding to the quake. “Our condolences to the families of the dead,” he wrote on Twitter. “The response is on its way.”

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said it was working to provide assistance to Afghanistan.

“The Pakistani people are in strong solidarity with their Afghan brothers at this difficult time,” the statement said. “We have no doubt that the brotherly Afghan people will overcome the effects of this natural disaster with their remarkable steadfastness,” he added.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported that the earthquakes were felt by 119 million people across Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, over a radius of 500 km.

The earthquake came as Afghanistan has been in a humanitarian and economic crisis since the Taliban took over the country in 2021 amid a chaotic US military withdrawal after two decades of war.
