The European Union will provide emergency funds P45.27-M to the victims of the North Luzon earthquake

MANILA, Philippines – The European Union provided 45.27 million pesos or 800,000 euros in emergency funds to help communities affected by last week’s earthquake.

In a statement on Thursday, the European Union said it hoped to fund programs that will provide safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene kits, mental health services, psychosocial support and education programs to the areas most affected by the earthquake.

“With this assistance, the European Union reaffirms its commitment and solidarity towards the victims of humanitarian disasters in the Philippines,” said Ana Isabel Sanchez Ruiz, Acting EU Delegation to the Philippines.

The European Union also said the Copernicus Emergency Management Service had activated satellite imagery and other data to aid relief efforts.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake was felt in neighboring provinces as well as in Metro Manila.

In its August 4 situation report, the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management said the quake displaced 63,303 individuals, some of whom were evacuated across 28 centers.

Meanwhile, 10 dead were reported, while 410 were injured.

To date, more than 90.089 million pesos in aid, including food packages and temporary shelters, has been distributed by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development, local government units and other NGOs across communities in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region.
