Experts study swarms of earthquakes recorded in the Midlands

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (Fox Carolina) – Nearly 80 earthquakes have been recorded in the Midlands since December, but experts explain why they don’t expect them to cause any damage.

“This swarm of earthquakes has escaped somewhat of a welcome,” said Dr. Scott White, a seismologist at the University of South Carolina.

According to geologist, Dr. Scott Howard of the Department of Natural Resources – South Carolina Geological Survey, constant earthquakes have become a concern for people.

“It’s gone beyond a nuisance to a concern because it’s about people,” Howard said.

State infrastructure experts are working to allay those concerns.

South Carolina Deputy Transportation Secretary Leland Colvin said the state’s roads and bridges are built to withstand earthquakes.

“Based on seismic areas across the United States, we expect some seismic events to occur in South Carolina,” Colvin said.

“Actually, seismic activity is just what I said is where you start seeing movement, our forces on that bridge that’s just below the surface, fortunately yes, the foundations of our bridges are designed to handle that. You would expect this bridge to have some movement,” Colvin said. There we designed it in advance.”

However, any time the bridge has movement from the earthquake, it is recorded by the state.

More than 8,000 bridges felt movement from this year’s biggest earthquake, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake that hit Elgin at the end of June.

Colvin says the bridge inspections were not necessary.

None of these saw enough movement for us to start our inspection program. “It was well below our threshold,” Colvin said.

So while the state has a plan in place for whether or when a major earthquake might strike, as long as earthquakes stay below 5.0 on the Richter scale, there’s no need to press the brakes.

“So we’re ready, ready to respond, and if there are any safety issues at all, we’ll close the bridge, we’ll be very conservative, but we’re not expecting anything other than maybe some minor damage and minor cracks and even up to a strength of at least 5.0 on the Richter scale, Colvin said.
