Another earthquake hits Tarutong north of Tapanuli: BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A series of earthquakes continued in Tarutong, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra. The latest was recorded in the early hours of Friday, October 7, 2022, at 03:00 a.m., the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

The earthquake was measured at 5.0 and can be felt on an IV MMI intensity scale, which means it can be felt by many people indoors and some outdoors during the day and people awake at night. Vibration can also cause doors and windows to make crackling sounds.

Based on the agency’s preliminary data, it was centered on Earth, five kilometers northeast north of Tapanuli and at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremor was also felt in Sipoholon on an intensity scale below III MMI.

Tarutong has been repeatedly hit by earthquakes since Saturday, October 1, 2022. It was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake followed by more than 100 aftershocks as of this morning. Aftershocks, which are dominated by small magnitudes, can be felt with a weak force.

Before today’s earthquake, the BMKG recorded a tremor of magnitude 4.5 on Thursday afternoon, at 15:30 West Indonesia Time (WIB). It was felt up to the Tarutung IV MMI intensity scale.
