Virginia earthquake rattles; Vibration reports received by the USGS

An earthquake shook parts of Virginia early in the day, leading to reports of a shaking sent to the USGS via “Have you felt it?” tool on their earthquake website. While the USGS received seismic reports, there were no reports of earthquake damage today.

The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 12:03 a.m., was six miles west-northwest of Short Pump and 17 miles northwest of Richmond. The USGS originally classified the earthquake as a seismic event of magnitude 2.4, but lowered the rating to 2.2. People felt the shaking around the Richmond area and as far south as the Colonial Heights area south of the city. Residents went on social media to report hearing a loud bang, followed by an earthquake.
